Glove weight (oz) is the amount of padding. 8–10 oz suits bag work and smaller athletes, 12–14 oz is the popular all-round training weight, and 16 oz is the usual choice for sparring and heavier adults. Always follow your gym's sparring rules.

Under Football Australia's MiniRoos formats, Under 6 to Under 9 play with a size 3 ball and Under 10 and Under 11 use a size 4. Older juniors and adults use a full-size size 5 ball.

Senior men and boys from around U14 use a 156g ball. Women, senior girls and most U12–U13 juniors use 142g. Younger juniors often use modified balls of around 125–142g. Check your competition rules.

Size 7 is the official ball for men and boys from about 15 years. Size 6 is used in women's basketball and for players aged 12–14, and size 5 suits younger players.

Lightly dampen the latex before play, rinse the palms in lukewarm water after each session and let the gloves air-dry away from heat. Keeping a separate pair for matches also helps.
